Spurious liquor, IMFL bottles seized

VILLUPURAM: The Villupuram district police have intensified combing operation to check the sale of spurious liquor and smuggling of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) across the State borders.

The personnel of the Prohibition Wing on Sunday spotted a gang of 14 persons involved in producing fake IMFL.

The police said that the group, led by S.Ganesan (28), was making illicit liquor near Kolliangunam lake. They were filling bottles with the brew and pasting labels of various brands.

The police personnel detained them, seized the labels, bottles, a car and a two-wheeler used for the illicit trade.

The police maintaining vigil at Marakkanam road junctions near Tindivanam seized IMFL bottles that were being smuggled in large quantity in two vehicles.

During a routine vehicle check, they found over 50 boxes containing 756 IMFL bottles on a Tata Sumo. The alcohol was being sent from Puducherry to Tambaram. The police secured P. Karthik (24) and G. Manoharan (29), both from Puducherry, and seized the alcohol and the vehile.

The police also detained another car carrying 95 bottles of IMFL and arrested S. Srinivasan (38) of Moolakulam and seized the vehicle at the same spot.

Sources said that vehicle-check would be intensified to avert smuggling of arms, explosives, liquor and other contraband.
