New transport region inaugurated

Fulfilling a long-cherished dream of the people of the district, Transport Minister K N Nehru on Monday commissioned the new STC region at Tiruvannamalai. This would be the fourth region within the Villupuram division of the State Transport Corporation to operate 358 buses attached to nine depots carved out of Vellore, Kancheepuram and Villupuram regions, including the 51 buses commissioned during the inaugural ceremony of the region. These buses would either be operated in the new routes or in the old routes as additional services to places like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Thanjavur, Karaikudi, etc.So far, there were no direct buses to these places from Tiruvannamalai. These new routes would cater to the needs of commuters from southern districts and labourers who have migrated to places like Tirupur for livelihood.

Villupuram to get 17,000 free LPG gas connections

Ponmudi to launch scheme on Sunday

District Collector Brajendra Navnith told presspersons here on Friday that it had been proposed to distribute 17,025 free cooking gas connections to the eligible beneficiaries in the district.
At a function to be held here on Sunday, Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudi, would inaugurate the scheme, he said. The assigned gas connections would be distributed on an equal basis in all the 12 Assembly constituencies in the district within three months.
The beneficiaries had been identified by a four-member committee consisting of the panchayat president, headmaster, village administrative officer and `makkal nala paniyalar'. Only the ration cardholders without gas connections would be eligible.

In the second phase, 1.20 lakh colour television sets would be distributed in 12 Assembly segments during this year. The prerequisites were that the beneficiaries should already have electricity and cable connections. He further said 27,076 cycles would be given away to the students this year. 1,100 acres had been identified for the third phase of land distribution to the landless labourers.
Under the Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, a sum of Rs 45.60 crore had been allocated for improving basic amenities in 228 villages. Under the scheme, each village would get Rs. 20 lakh for providing basic facilities.
