Forest officials rescue monitor lizards

Puducherry, Nov 4 Forest and wildlife department officials in Puducherry have rescued monitor lizards, which were being caught by poachers, at Villianoor near Pudhucherry.

An official source said the monitor lizards were rescued from two persons, hailing from Villupuram district, and the reptiles were allegedly caught from the hilly area in Kedar village in Tamil Nadu yesterday.

The monitor lizards were normally purchased by bar attached restaurants and cooked as dishes for the consumers. Each lizard was reportedly sold at a cost of Rs 400 or Rs 500 depending upon the meat content.

Acting on a tip off from local people, the forest officials rescued two monitor lizards which were stocked in a restaurant at Villianoor last week.(Agencies)
