Gandhi statue damaged

VILLUPURAM: A 37- year-old Mahatma Gandhi statue, was razed to the ground, when a tractor rammed into it on Saturday.The statue was set up on the Pandit Nehru Road by the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on January 8, 1970. Former Chief Minister K Kamaraj had inaugurated the statue in a function. The maintenance of the statue was handed over to the Villupuram Municipality.According to sources, the tractor was transporting a huge quantity of sugarcane to a sugarmill in Ariyur on Saturday. The driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed against the statue.On getting information, Municipal Chairman Janakaraj, tahsildar Raju and Congress leaders, went to the spot. They then decided to set up a new statue at the same place.
