AIADMK cadres take to streets; burn CM`s effigies

VILLUPURAM: Hundreds of AIADMK workers and several senior leaders were today arrested as they enforced road blockades across the state to protest Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's alleged derogatory remarks against party supremo J Jayalalithaa.

Shouting slogans against Karunanidhi, the party workers, including a large number of women, blocked roads in different places in this city and burnt figures of Karunanidhi in effigy and copies of DMK organ 'Murasoli', police said.

A police inspector suffered burns on his legs when he tried to prevent agitators from burning copies of 'Murasoli" near Kottaikuppam in Villupuram district, they said.

Several senior AIADMK leaders like presidium chairman E Madhusudanan, organising secretary Sulochana Sampath, former ministers D Jayakumar and B Valarmathi were among those arrested.

Madhusudanan alleged Karunanidhi had been making derogatory remarks against Jayalalithaa and "he has insulted the womenfolk, which is highly condemnable".

Sources said around 2,500 workers, including 1,100 women, were arrested in the capital while the figure might cross 5,000 all over the state.

Commuters bore the brunt of the protests as traffic was paralysed on the arterial Anna road here leading to serpentine queues of vehicles.

Accusing Karunanidhi of making "derogatory" remarks against her while joining issue with her over her vow to eliminate the DMK, Jayalalithaa had on Tuesday said AIADMK cadres would not be mere spectators if he went on making such remarks.
