CUDDALORE: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss flagged off the train bound for Salem on the newly completed railway line from Vriddachalam.
Speaking at a meeting before the inauguration on Sunday, Minister of State for Railways R Velu said that the State Government had provided 50 percent of the total cost of Rs 187.09 crore for the gauge conversion work on the 139-kilometre-long railway line.
The Railways department, which proposed to take up doubling the arterial railway link from Dindigul to Villupuram, had submitted a proposal to the Planning Commission.
The commission, in turn, had sought that 50 percent of the finances for the project be met by the State Government.
For the last four years, the Ministry of Railways had allotted Rs 4,000 crore for a number of projects in the State.
Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss said that the Central Government had been implementing an ambitious National Rural Health Project in the country over the last few years.
''It has been introduced in 5.2 lakh villages and will be extended to the remaining one lakh villages next year,'' he added.
