Villupuram Government Medical College begins admission process
VILLUPURAM: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy inaugurated the sale of applications for admission to Villupuram Government Medical College at Mundiampakkam near here on Monday.
He told the reporters that following the approval given by the Medical Council of India for starting the medical courses in the new college this academic year the sale of applications were formally started today.
He said that the work on the construction of buildings for the government engineering colleges at Villupuram and Tindivanam was proceeding on a war-footing and these structures would be ready within three months.
Mr. Ponmudy said that ever since he had become an MLA in 1989 he had been allotting funds from the MLA Local Area Development Funds to the government girls' and boys' higher secondary schools at Villupuram and the Keezhperumbakkam school for construction of new classrooms.
After improvement in basic amenities and infrastructure and filling up of teacher posts in the schools in the district the academic performance had gone up significantly. For instance, the performance in Plus Two examinations this year had registered a growth of 4.8 per cent over that of last year.
The previous year it recorded an increase of 13.1 per cent over that of 2007-2008.
Mr. Ponmudy noted that the Villupuram Municipal Girls' School, where 400 students were studying, there was lack of space.
Hence, with the NABARD's assistance to the tune of Rs.4.61 crore it had been proposed to construct 84 new classrooms, three overhead tanks and 15 toilets in the municipal school.
The school would have two wings separated by a road and therefore, to establish a link between them an elevated pathway would be constructed. On one side the old court buildings would be demolished to construct the classrooms.
Mr. Ponmudy further said that for improving literacy rate the Karunanidhi government had increased the number of schools, upgraded several schools and improved the amenities, and these efforts had started bearing fruits.
Collector In-charge N. Venkatachalam, S. Pushparaj, MLA, Municipal Chairman R. Janakaraj and others participated.

VILLUPURAM: The Villupuram range police (comprising Villupuram and Cuddalore districts) and their Puducherry counterparts have agreed to make mutual arrangements for exchange of information over wireless sets, according to E.Ma.Masanamuthu, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Villupuram range.
Mr Masanamuthu told The Hindu that a decision in this regard was taken at the Border Police Coordination Meeting held recently. As of now the wireless sets of Villupuram, Cuddalore and Puducherry were operating on different frequencies and hence, immediate communication could not be established. It has now been decided to set up one wireless set each of the Puducherry police in the Police Control Rooms at Villupuram and Cuddalore and vice-versa.

State least hit by inflation: Ponmudy
VILLUPURAM: Tamil Nadu has been least hit by inflation, because of the good governance of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, asserted K. Ponmudy, Higher Education Minister.
He was speaking at a function held at Kalaignar Arivalayam here to give away identity cards and financial assistance to the members of the construction workers' welfare board on Sunday. He further said that since Mr. Karunanidhi had spent his 72 years of political life amidst the economically weaker sections in the rural and urban areas he was fully acquainted with their problems. Hence, he could launch many a scheme for improving their lot.
Mr. Ponmudy underscored the point that in extending the helping hand through various welfare schemes, such as giving away free colour television sets and free cooking gas connections the Chief Minister did not distinguish or discriminate the people on political lines.
