Viluppuram Rural Bazar

The rural poor in Viluppuram District,Tamil Nadu, with their rich skill set and adequate financial assistance from government and financial institutions, create an impressive array of exotic and useful products. However, owing to lack of adequate marketing infrastructure, many of these products remain confined to the local markets, thereby resulting in inadequate monetary returns. While the global market remains oblivious to the creative genius of the Tamil Nadu rural producer, the producers are deprived of the good monetary returns that is assured in a global market. Rural Bazar, a new initiative from the Department of Rural Development, Government of Tamil Nadu and National Informatics Centre, envisages introducing the fine creations of the Tamil Nadu rural genius to the Internet world, thereby strengthening the rural poor. Mayilam

Mayilam - Arulmigu Subramaniya Swami Temple located on small hillock at Mailam is a famous place for of pilgrimage. It is about 32 kms from Viluppuram on the Pondicherry - Thindivanam road. The Panguni Uthiram festival held in March - April fascinates a large crowd of devotes from all over Tamil Nadu.

Marakanam Beach

Marakanam Beach - It is 22 kms from Pondicherry across East Coast Road in Vanur Taluk. The salt field is very famous in this beach.

Crack-down on rowdies

As part of the stringent police action to curb rowdies across the State, Villupuram police Superintendent Periyayya has issued orders to arrest all those having criminal background in the district .The Superintendent had also ordered prevention of sale of illicit arrack and other prohibition- related offences in the district. It is said there were about 200 rowdies in Villupuram district.

Auroville

Auroville - A International Township - this town of tomorrow that's now in the making is just across the Pondicherry border in Tamil Nadu. Symbolishing an experiment in international living, it was launched in 1968 with the co-operation of many nations, at the behest of the Mother. 'The city of Dawn' is still in its initial stages of development. Matrimandir, the meditation hall is, only a few houses scattered over its vastness to accommodate the residents who, at present, number around 1,000. they live in 14 different communes and speak 55 different languages. But the goal is common-to evolve into a fuller human being by combining a life of strenuous physical activity with the discipline nurtured by the regular and spiritual exercise. Auroville is an incorporated intentional community in the northeast part of Tamil Nadu. The city was founded in 1968 by Parisian Mirra Alfassa, best known as “The Mother,” the spiritual collaborator of the famed Indian revolutionary and evolutionary yogi Sri Aurobindo Ghose.Attracting residents and visitors from many nations, Auroville was conceived by its founder as “a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities.” Auroville is endorsed by UNESCO, supported by the Government of India and recognized by many nations of the world.

The township is constantly growing and developing with members of the community working toward the shared vision of realizing human unity. The population currently stands at approximately 2000 people, one third of whom are Indian. The center of the community is a large meditation hall called the Matrimandir, which is said to house the world’s largest crystal.
In the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004, Auroville quickly created shelter and provided food, medical resources and other assistance for over 1500 homeless survivors of the disaster seeking refuge from the surrounding area.
