Join administrative services, engineering students told

VILLUPURAM: Commissioner of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Gagandeep Singh Bedi has called upon engineering students to join Indian Administrative Services.

He was speaking at the 11th Annual Day celebrations of IFET College of Engineering here recently.

Mr. Bedi said that in terms of producing engineers, India ranked second in the world. Engineers could utilise their professional skills in administrative services for which they should prepare for Union Public Service Commission and Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission examinations. This would help them occupy pivotal positions in the administrative setup.

Mr. Bedi said that besides having adequate infrastructure, engineering colleges should raise their standards by having a tie-up with multinational companies, foreign universities and training centres.

He lauded the IFET management for providing all facilities for promoting professional education, which the students should put to better use.

S. Balakrishnan, dean, School of Physical, Chemical and Applied Sciences, Pondicherry University, called upon the students to develop interpersonal skills and leadership qualities to improve career opportunities.

Mr. Bedi and Mr. Balakrishnan gave away prizes to candidates for various curricular and co-curricular activities such as best projects, best presentation and 100 per cent attendance. They also conferred titles of Mr. and Ms. Smart on students.

S.S. Jayachandran, principal, and J.C. Vijayshree, assistant professor, read out a report. College chairman V. Raja, vice-chairman A. Mohammed Ilyas and secretary K. Sivram Alva were present. Cultural programmes were also held.
